Experimental Mesothelioma Therapy Options

Though there is no known cure for mesothelioma, there are new mesothelioma treatment options, including various types of therapies.

Gene Therapy

Gene therapy involves the injection of modified genes into the infected area in an attempt to replace missing or mutated genes with healthy duplicates.

Immunotherapy

The goal of immunotherapy is to further tap into the body's own natural disease fighting system and stimulate greater resistance to harmful cells. Its is often considered beneficial when used alongside other forms of care.

Photodynamic Therapy

The use of a light-stimulated drug is at the heart of photodynamic therapy. It is the goal to use an agent that will most readily collect in harmful cells rather than healthy ones. Then, when it is exposed to a light source, the drug will produce a chemical that kills the cancerous cells.

Highly Integrated Adaptive Radiotherapy (HI-ART)

Highly Integrated Adaptive Radiotherapy (HI-ART) is a newly adapted form of radiation therapy that is much more targeted than a traditional approach. Using the precision of CT scanning which takes place through an on-board scanner only moments before radiation is applied, the treatment is much more efficient in actually being aimed at the cancerous cells and not at healthy tissue. Its application is done in a 360-degree format rather than from one direction only which also increases the overall effectiveness of the treatment.
